xTool S1 vs P2S

This is a wavelength decision disguised as a model comparison. The S1 is the smaller, lower-capital diode platform; the P2S is the CO₂ choice when clear acrylic, camera placement, or a wider processing area drives revenue.

Short verdict

Choose the 40W S1 for wood, leather, paper, and dark opaque acrylic when footprint and complete cost matter most. Choose the 55W P2S when clear acrylic is a core product, the 600 mm-wide work area matters, or dual-camera positioning and CO₂ absorption solve a repeat workflow.

Choose the xTool S1 when

  • Your products are primarily wood, leather, paper, coated items, or dark opaque acrylic rather than clear acrylic.
  • The smaller, lighter chassis materially improves placement, delivery, or workspace access.
  • You want a lower-capital machine while validating demand and can reserve budget for extraction, air assist, riser, rotary, materials, and customer acquisition.
  • The optional 2W infrared module covers occasional surface marking, while deep or high-throughput bare-metal work is not the core business.

Choose the xTool P2S when

  • Clear acrylic signs, displays, ornaments, or products are a core revenue line.
  • The additional 102 mm of listed processing width changes nesting, product size, or batch count.
  • Dual-camera preview and close-range positioning reduce setup labor on irregular stock or mixed batches.
  • Your order volume and margin justify the larger machine, CO₂ maintenance path, and higher complete setup cost.

Important evidence gaps

Equal maximum movement speed does not mean equal cutting throughput. Wavelength absorption, optical power, material color/composition, focus, air assist, pass count, edge-quality target, and job geometry determine useful cycle time.

Manufacturer one-pass cutting claims are not BeamBasis test results. They do not establish repeatable production settings, acceptable finish, smoke residue, consumable life, or safe processing for a buyer’s exact material.

BeamBasis has not yet compared camera calibration, positioning repeatability, extraction performance, noise, maintenance time, or support outcomes under a controlled protocol.

Who should buy neither?

  • A business centered on deep bare-metal engraving, serial production, metal color marking, or relief should compare fiber or MOPA systems.
  • A first-time seller without validated products may have a better return from outsourcing, a makerspace, or a smaller proof-of-demand setup.
  • A buyer requiring a substantially larger flat bed should evaluate larger CO₂ or production systems rather than forcing the workflow into either chassis.
  • A site without appropriate extraction, material identification, supervision, electrical planning, and fire procedures is not ready for either machine.

Complete-cost questions before checkout

  1. Which exact products require clear acrylic or CO₂ absorption rather than merely benefiting from higher advertised power?
  2. Does the quote include air assist, honeycomb/slats, riser, rotary, conveyor/passthrough hardware, filtration, fire controls, and the required work surface?
  3. Can the room support the machine, lid movement, ducting, coolant/maintenance access, long-material path, and delivery weight?
  4. What tube/module, optics, coolant, filter, warranty, return, shipping, and downtime assumptions belong in the payback model?
  5. How many paid units per month recover the complete usable setup after blanks, waste, labor, fees, and marketing?
